What is Knowledge Management (KM)?

Davenport (1994) offered the still widely quoted definition: “Knowledge management is the process of capturing, distributing, and effectively using knowledge.”

So why do we need it and why now?

We believe the greatest risk to industry is knowledge retention and transfer against the background of an aging workforce. The Nuclear Energy Institute estimates that 39 percent of the nuclear workforce will hit retirement age by 2018, meaning the industry will have to hire 20,000 new workers over the next four years to replace the retirees. In addition, as part of its energy industry strategy, the UK government has committed to creating 100,000 jobs in the nuclear sector to fill the existing nuclear skills gap. These statistics should provoke some thought on how we set about harnessing what we have now and embedding it into the future.
